Biography of Dr. Rama Kausalya
Dr. R. Kausalya is a distinguished musicologist, educator, scholar, and cultural leader whose life’s work has been devoted to the preservation and advancement of South Indian music, devotional literature, and traditional knowledge systems. Born into the historic Thillaisthanam Jatavallabhar lineage and deeply rooted in the illustrious Tyagaraja Śiṣya Paramparā, she inherited a rich musical legacy that shaped her lifelong commitment to art, scholarship, and education.
Her academic journey reflects a rare blend of rigorous scholarship and practical musicianship. A First Rank holder in Sangita Siromani from the University of Madras and recipient of the prestigious Dr. A.L. Mudaliar Award, she later earned an M.A. in Tamil and a Ph.D. in Music. Under the guidance of eminent gurus and scholars, she developed expertise in Carnatic music, Tamil Isai, Bhakti literature, Tevaram, Divya Prabandham, folk traditions, temple arts, and musicology.
